CBD Auto services and repairs Volkswagen vehicles at 50 Caswell St, East Brisbane. Golf, Polo, Tiguan, T-Roc, T-Cross, Passat, Touareg, Amarok, Caddy, Transporter and Multivan all come through the workshop, for scheduled logbook servicing, diagnostics and mechanical repair.
Two things make Volkswagen work different from general servicing. The first is the DSG gearbox — there are several versions with different service requirements, and a lot of owners are told the wrong thing about theirs. The second is that VW shares engines across a huge model range, so the important question is rarely “what car is it” but “which engine, and which generation of it”.
Call 07 3391 3811 or email admin@cbdauto.com.au with your model, year and engine and we’ll tell you what’s actually due. Scope and quote before any work starts.
Volkswagen Servicing in East Brisbane
Most Australian-delivered Volkswagens run a fixed schedule of 12 months or 15,000 km, whichever comes first — Golf, Polo, Tiguan, T-Roc, T-Cross, Touareg and Caddy among them. Amarok and Crafter run a longer 12 month or 20,000 km interval, and the current Ford-based Transporter is longer again at 12 months or 30,000 km. We confirm the figure against your VIN.
Volkswagen also has a flexible LongLife regime, identified by option code QG1, where the car calculates its own service distance from driving conditions and requires a specific oil standard. Australian cars are overwhelmingly on the fixed schedule, but we check the coding against the VIN rather than assuming — an imported or European-delivered vehicle may be set differently, and using the wrong oil on a LongLife car creates its own problems.
Alongside the annual service, the longer-interval items are the ones that catch people out:
Item | Typical interval guidance |
|---|---|
Engine oil and filter | 12 months / 15,000 km |
Cabin (pollen) filter | Around 30,000 km |
Air filter | Model and engine dependent, commonly around 60,000 km |
Spark plugs | Around 60,000 km, model dependent |
Brake fluid | Time-based replacement, typically first at 3 years then every 2 years |
DSG oil and filter (wet-clutch units) | 60,000 km |
Timing belt, where fitted | Model and engine specific — a high-consequence job |
Intervals vary by model year and engine, so we confirm the schedule for your specific vehicle. Our logbook and car servicing page covers the general standard we work to.
DSG servicing — which gearbox do you actually have?
This is the most misunderstood part of VW ownership, and worth getting right: a DSG oil service on a car that doesn’t need one is wasted money, and skipping one on a car that does is expensive.
Gearbox | Type | Common applications | Fluid service |
|---|---|---|---|
DQ200, 7-speed | Dry clutch | Polo, Golf 1.4 TSI, T-Cross, lower-output T-Roc, Caddy 1.4 | No scheduled fluid change specified by VW |
DQ250, 6-speed | Wet clutch | Golf Mk5/Mk6 GTI, early Mk7 GTI, Golf R, Tiguan, Passat | 60,000 km, oil and filter |
DQ381, 7-speed | Wet clutch | Later Golf 7.5 GTI/R, Golf 8, Tiguan Mk2, Arteon | 60,000 km in Australian conditions |
DQ500, 7-speed | Wet clutch | Transporter 2.0 BiTDI 4MOTION, Multivan | 60,000 km |
Published DQ381 figures vary by market and model year; 60,000 km is the interval we work to here, and we will tell you what your vehicle’s own schedule specifies. The dry-clutch DQ200 is the one that causes confusion. Volkswagen specifies no scheduled fluid change for it — its known weak point is the mechatronic unit rather than the clutch fluid. Some workshops suggest a preventative gear-oil change at higher kilometres as cheap insurance, but that is an optional measure, not a VW requirement. We’ll tell you which unit is in your car and which category any recommendation falls into.

Common Volkswagen Problems We Can Diagnose
The items below are well documented, but each belongs to a particular engine family and build window. A Golf 8 does not share a fault list with a Golf 6.
Timing chain tensioner — EA888 Gen 1 and Gen 2 1.8 and 2.0 TSI, roughly 2008 to 2015
The original tensioner design can fail to hold chain tension, allowing the chain to jump and cause severe internal damage. A rattle on start-up or shutdown is the warning sign, but a quiet engine is not proof the tensioner is healthy. A revised tensioner was fitted to later production, and Gen 3 engines from around 2013 in MQB models are markedly less affected. Replacing a tensioner preventatively is a modest job compared with repairing the engine afterwards.
Water pump and thermostat housing module — EA888 Gen 3, 2013 onwards
The plastic pump and thermostat housing warps and cracks, causing gradual coolant loss and a low-coolant warning. Very common on Golf Mk7 and 7.5, Tiguan Mk2, Passat B8 and Arteon, and revised parts are available. Sustained under-bonnet heat in Brisbane is not kind to this style of component, so we pressure-test as part of a service inspection.
Intake valve carbon build-up — direct-injection TSI and FSI engines
Where fuel is injected directly into the cylinder, nothing washes the back of the intake valves, so deposits accumulate. Symptoms are a rough cold start that improves once warm, poor throttle response and worse economy. Worth inspecting somewhere in the 60,000 to 80,000 km range on affected engines. Newer engines with both port and direct injection are far less prone to it — this is diagnosis-led work, not something to book at every service.
Coil packs and spark plugs — all TSI and FSI
A breaking-down coil causes a misfire, a flashing engine light and rough running. They are a wear item on turbocharged direct-injection engines, best replaced as a set with correct heat-range plugs.
PCV and oil separator diaphragm — EA888
A split diaphragm causes oil consumption, a vacuum leak, rough idle and sometimes an audible whistle. Frequently mistaken for worn piston rings, and a far smaller repair.
DPF and EGR on diesels — EA189 and EA288, roughly 2009 onwards
The most Brisbane-specific problem on this list. A diesel used for short, low-speed inner-city runs never gets hot enough to complete a particulate filter regeneration, so soot accumulates, regens abort part-way, fuel dilutes the engine oil, and eventually the filter blocks and the car drops into limp mode. EGR valves coke up on the same duty cycle. A periodic sustained run at highway speed genuinely helps, and reading the stored soot load tells us where the filter actually sits before anything gets replaced.
AdBlue and SCR faults — EA288 and later diesels
Dosing injector clogging, heater faults and quality sensor issues. Contaminated or non-compliant fluid — anything not meeting the AUS 32 standard — can damage NOx sensors and the SCR catalyst, and over-filling causes spillage and crystallisation around the tank and connectors. Both are avoidable.
DSG mechatronic faults
Juddering, harsh engagement, gear selection faults or a loss of drive. On the DQ200 the mechatronic unit is the recognised weak point; on wet-clutch units, overdue fluid is the more common contributor.
A note on the current Amarok and Transporter
This matters if you own one. The second-generation Amarok, from 2023, is built on the Ford Ranger platform with Ford engines and a ten-speed automatic — it is not a TSI, TDI or DSG vehicle. The new Transporter, which arrived here as an MY25 vehicle, is based on the Ford Transit Custom and runs its own 30,000 km schedule. The first-generation Amarok, 2011 to 2022, is a genuine Volkswagen with a longitudinal TDI and mechanical 4MOTION, and the Multivan T7 and Caddy 5 remain VW architecture.
Generic “your VW’s DSG” advice is simply wrong for a current Amarok. CBD Auto services both sides of that family, including heavy vehicles and commercial work, so a trade ute or van gets the right treatment either way.
Volkswagen Diagnostics
A Volkswagen will often keep driving normally while storing a fault, or drop into reduced power with no obvious cause. Reading a single powertrain code rarely tells the whole story, because the relevant data frequently sits in the transmission, ABS or comfort modules.
Our VW diagnostic work covers:
- Full fault-code scanning across all accessible control modules
- Engine management diagnosis — coil and misfire testing, fuel trim, boost control, carbon-related running faults
- DSG fault investigation, including mechatronic and adaptation data
- Diesel diagnostics: DPF soot load and regeneration status, EGR function, AdBlue dosing
- Electrical faults — parasitic drain, charging system, comfort-CAN and module communication errors
- Service reminder reset and coding checks, including fixed versus LongLife configuration
Independent Australian repairers can purchase manufacturer service and repair information under the national motor vehicle service and repair information sharing scheme, which commenced on 1 July 2022 and covers passenger and light goods vehicles built on or after 1 January 2002.

Why Choose CBD Auto for Volkswagen Service in East Brisbane?
- VW is everyday work here, alongside Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover — the platforms and the diagnostic approach carry across.
- We tell you which DSG you have and whether it actually needs a fluid service, rather than selling one to everybody.
- Manufacturer-grade diagnostic equipment and OEM-quality parts as standard.
- Repco Authorised Service workshop with technicians on continuous training through the Repco Auto Tech program.
- Arctick authorised for air conditioning work.
- Cars, utes and vans in the same workshop. Because CBD Auto also handles commercial vehicles and fleets, a Transporter or Amarok is routine work here.
- A quote before the work, with approval sought before any additional repairs.
- Independent servicing done properly. Your consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law are not conditional on where the car is serviced — the ACCC’s position is that an independent repairer can service a vehicle without affecting them, and they cannot be removed by any contract or warranty. We follow the Volkswagen schedule, use correct-specification parts and oils and document the work, and if a repair of ours causes a fault we put it right. A pre-purchased VW Care Plan is a separate contract worth checking first.

When Should You Book a Volkswagen Service?
Book a service or inspection if you notice:
- A service due reminder, or any warning light including the glow plug or DPF light
- A rattle on start-up or shutdown on an older 1.8 or 2.0 TSI
- A low coolant warning, coolant loss, or a sweet smell after driving
- A rough cold start that clears once warm, or hesitation under load
- Juddering, harsh engagement or delayed drive from a DSG
- A flashing engine light — stop driving and call, as an active misfire can damage the catalytic converter
- A DPF warning, or a diesel running rough after mostly short trips
- Brake vibration, squealing or a longer pedal
- Slow cranking or a battery that has needed a jump start
- Air conditioning that no longer holds temperature through a Brisbane summer
Volkswagen Service FAQs
Q. Where can I find a VW mechanic in East Brisbane?
A. CBD Auto services Volkswagen vehicles at 50 Caswell St, East Brisbane QLD 4169. Call 07 3391 3811 or email admin@cbdauto.com.au.
Q. How often should my Volkswagen be serviced?
A. Australian-delivered Volkswagens are normally on a fixed 12 month or 15,000 km schedule, whichever comes first. The Crafter is 12 months or 20,000 km. We confirm against your VIN, since some vehicles are coded to the flexible LongLife regime, which needs a different oil specification.
Q. Does my DSG need an oil change?
A. It depends which DSG you have. The wet-clutch DQ250, DQ381 and DQ500 units have a 60,000 km oil and filter service. The dry-clutch DQ200 seven-speed has no scheduled fluid change specified by Volkswagen. We identify the gearbox first and tell you which applies.
Q. Can an independent workshop service my VW without affecting the warranty?
A. Yes. The ACCC’s position is that a vehicle does not need to be dealer-serviced for your consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law to apply, and they cannot be removed by a contract or warranty. The servicing still has to follow the VW schedule, use parts and oils that meet specification, and be documented. A pre-purchased Care Plan is a separate contract, usually redeemable at a dealership only.
Q. Why does my DPF light keep coming on?
A. Most often because the vehicle isn’t getting the sustained driving a regeneration needs, and inner-Brisbane trips are frequently too short and too slow. We check the stored soot load and regeneration history before recommending anything — a forced regeneration and a replacement filter are very different bills.
Q. Is the timing chain problem going to affect my Golf?
A. It depends on the engine and build year. It is predominantly an EA888 Gen 1 and Gen 2 issue on 1.8 and 2.0 TSI engines built roughly between 2008 and 2015. Gen 3 engines in MQB-platform cars use a revised tensioner and are much less affected. Tell us the build year and engine code and we’ll give you a straight answer.
Q. How much does a VW service cost?
A. It depends on the model, engine, interval reached and whether a DSG service or other longer-interval items fall due at the same time. Call with your model, year and odometer reading and we’ll quote before starting.

Posted on Google Jack CowperTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Took my Range Rover Sport in for a service and couldn’t be happier with the experience. The team was professional, honest, and kept me updated throughout the whole process. The car came back running great and everything was completed on time with attention to detail. Hard to find workshops these days that actually care about their customers and their work. Highly recommend these guys if you want quality service and good communication.Posted on Google JayTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Could not thank and recommend CBD Auto enough, I was driving to a nearby store when I popped my head in to discuss a loose bolt and knocking noises after taking my car to a service at a different mechanic. Without hesitation Jamie gave me his honest opinion on how this issue is extremely dangerous and offered to take a look. Jamie managed to squeeze me in between appointments, not only looking at the problem but fixing and ensuring all other bolts were tightened. When I asked how much do I owe, he said nothing! This kind gesture was so important to me especially with the stress of not being able to drive away while calling the original mechanic for giving me an unsafe car on the roads. It’s clear this company is not like others, they care about the customers and give back when people need it most. You’ve not only gained another customer who can rely on you but you’ve saved a possible incident on the roads today. Thank you Jamie, means a lot!Posted on Google Zoe RowleyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Outstanding service — quick, reliable, and highly professional. Communication was excellent throughout. As someone who doesn’t know much about cars, I really felt looked after. The team took the time to clearly explain what needed fixing and went above and beyond to help. I also truly appreciated their honesty, you can trust they won’t take advantage! 100% would recommendPosted on Google Arturo FloresTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
